L'Alliance Française Bordeaux Aquitaine

The Alliance Française Bordeaux-Aquitaine was created in 1883 to promote the French language and culture and today comprises a vast international network of 1070 establishments throughout 138 countries.


The Alliance Française offers French classes to more than 460,000 students from France and worldwide, its aim is to make French culture and other French speaking countries better known but also to promote cultural diversity by validating all cultures.


The Alliance Française is situated in the centre of Bordeaux and welcomes more than 1,000 adults and students (minimum age 16) from all over the world (more than 90 different nationalities each year) to learn and improve their knowledge of the French language and culture in a convivial and international environment. Intensive and extended French classes for all levels are on offer all year round.

The Alliance Française has the badge for ‘Quality in French as a Foreign Language’ awarded by the state (our French classes are graded according to the European Framework for Languages) and the teachers, who are all qualified and experienced, use dynamic and interactive methods. We have the latest technology; our centre is equipped with an IT room and interactive whiteboards.

Accommodation is based in host families and cultural activities are on offer which ensures a complete and efficient linguistic immersion.

The Alliance Française is also an exam centre for the DELF and DALF qualifications.

Goethe- Institut Bordeaux

The Goethe-Institut is the most important international cultural institution for the German Federal Republic with 136 institutions.


Its mission is to promote the German language abroad, to encourage cultural cooperation internationally and to communicate a contemporary image of Germany and its cultural, social and political life.


The work is based mainly on cultural activities and the diverse and open German society. It is also inspired by the skills and ideas of its partners and connections with its own intercultural and professional projects. It is a partner for all who are working for Germany and its language and culture; it is independent and without political bias.

Institut Cervantes

The Instituto Cervantes is the main worldwide institution dedicated to teaching Spanish and promoting other Hispanic cultures.
Spanish is spoken by 450 million people in 20 countries and Spanish is the second most widely spoken language used for international communication.


It is also the language spoken by Cervantes, Garcia Lorca, Borges, Pedro Almodovar and many other famous names who have made Spanish and Latin American culture and language one of the most open, commercial and creative.
Created in 1991, the Instituto Cervantes currently comprises more than 60 centres across 4 continents. In Bordeaux, its centre is situated in a monumental 18th century building owned by the Spanish state where the renowned Spanish painter Francisco de Goya y Lucientes lived and died in 1824.


The Bordeaux centre gives general and specialised Spanish lessons for all levels as well as classes in the 3 other official languages of Spain: Catalan, Basque and Galician.


It awards official Spanish qualifications in Spanish as a Foreign Language (D.E.L.E)


In order to fulfil its mission as cultural ambassador, the Instituto Cervantes in Bordeaux offers varied events all year round in literature, fine art, cinema, music, science, philosophy and theatre.

It collaborates with Spanish and local artists in the region facilitating a network for exchange and cooperation between nations.


Finally it provides the public with a library service and a media centre, open to everyone, with more than 14,500 books, records, DVDs and journals.

The Società Dante Alighieri was founded in Italy in 1889 to protect and promote the Italian language and culture in the world.
Today its presence comes through 3,300 schools who organise a variety of activities each year relating to Italy, its language, and civilisation.


Recognised by the Italian state, the Società Dante Alighieri Bordeaux (association law 1901), promotes the Italian language through a series of different activities.


It organises classes for all levels between October and June.


Since 1993, when the certification of competence in English PLIDA was officially recognised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Convention 1903 on 4th November, the Società Dante Alighieri has made a commitment to validate Italian with the PLIDA. This certification validates skills in Italian according to levels established by European guidelines.


Monthly lectures, exhibitions, plays, concerts and film screenings are also on offer.

Institut Camões Bordeaux

The Instituto Camões was created in 1992 and is a public institution indirectly integrated into the state administration but with financial and organisational independence.


It follows the directives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the areas of culture and education and also works with the Ministries of Education, Culture and Science, and Technology and Higher Education.

The Instituto Camões’s mission is to offer and carry out policies increasing the use of and teaching the Portuguese language abroad, promoting Portuguese as a language of international communication.In this way, the Instituto Camões manages the network for teaching Portuguese including pre-school, primary, and secondary and higher education.


In the field of communication and lifelong learning it coordinates and develops long distance learning, supports research in languages and manages the system for the review, certification and validation of credits.


One of the main purposes of the Instituto Camões is the promotion of Portuguese culture abroad. This is done through initiating, setting up and promoting events which encourage the awareness of different forms of artistic expression, supporting the publication of Portuguese authors in a foreign language and awarding grants to students and teachers through the international network. It guarantees that the country is represented in the negotiation of cultural agreements and consequent partnership programmes.


The Instituto Camões with its European dimension is part of EUNIC, the European Union National Institutes for Culture, and the EFNIL, the European Federation of National Institutions for Language, and is developing partnerships for joint projects.

At present, the Instituto Camões works in 69 countries, has cultural bases in 19 countries and is represented in 294 Higher Education institutions and national organisations. It supports 30 charters and 49 professional development centres for teachers in primary and secondary schools and coordinates 57 Portuguese language centres. It has a total of 155,000 learners including 1,142 teachers from pre-school through to Higher Education. The virtual Camões Centre (CVC) is the online platform for the Instituto Camões that supports teaching and learning of Portuguese and the promotion of Portuguese culture in the world as well as long distance learning.

In France there is cultural centre (IC) in Paris, there are 3 Portugese Language Centres, 3 Portugese professors and Instituto Camões lecturers or tutors in 15 universities.
